We were lucky enough to get an interview with ex rugby captain Fran Cotton and we wanted to know what is the biggest different about the game today compared to when you played?

“Difference is in fitness levels – technical skills – full time professional – huge difference is how they approach the game. Being professional allows you to become a good a player as you can be, no need to be worrying about day to day living. Full time commitment to rugby without the decision of what has to take a back seat rugby/job/family – one of the 3 has to suffer when it’s amateur! Player’s choice!

Obviously the more practice the better you get. Gains in medicine and nutrition are making improvement from generation to generation. Certain aspects of the game are harder now particularly in defence as everyone now has a role to fill.”

We asked Fran if there were any classic moments that come to mind. Fran continues;

“British Lions – 2 tours 1971 and 1974, British lions played Canterbury – absolute brawl – the Lions lost 4 potential test players through injury. They decided after that that they had to look after themselves as the referee wouldn’t do it – they brought in the 99 call – if everyone got involved in the brawl the referee couldn’t send them all off so you had to look after yourself.

1974 carried on the huge togetherness – if anyone touched one of our players more trouble followed afterwards. A much cleaner game now than it was with better referees and video analysis; plus if you get caught you are penalised/suspended/lose your job etc retrospectively.”
